This beautiful Folkcraft Legend hammered dulcimer features an extended range and a huge, vibrant sound. With sixteen treble courses and fifteen bass courses, the 16/15 has a total of forty-seven notes and plays the major keys of "D", "G", "C", "F", "A", and a lower octave "D". On this dulcimer the key of "C" is able to be played as a full chromatic scale.

Our Folkcraft Legend 16/15 has a unique arched construction that provides exceptional strength without the penalty of adding so much wood that the instrument weighs so much that it can't resonate properly. The Folkcraft Legend 16/15 features maple pin blocks (for durability and stable intonation), walnut trim pieces (for classy good looks) and mahogany soundboard and back (for exceptional resonance, sustain, and clarity of sound). Decorative rosettes complete the picture of elegance, as they give the tone holes a decorative touch, and make the instrument stand in a league of its own.

The dimensions on our Folkcraft Legend 16/15 are approximately 42 inches wide, 18 inches tall, and 2 1/2 inches deep. The instrument weighs only 13 pounds, making it easy to transport.

Have you ever dreamed of building a fine musical instrument, but don't have the time (or the tools) to prepare the wood for assembly? We can help you fulfill your dreams with the Folkcraft black walnut dulcimer kit!

Folkcraft dulcimer kits are ready to assemble. All of the hardware (machine heads, nut, bridge, end pins, strings) is included; the sides are already bent; the scroll head is shaped, routed, and drilled; the fingerboard is already fretted (by the same luthiers that build the world famous Folkcraft and FolkRoots dulcimers); the wood has all been sanded to at least 120 grit; and detailed instructions are included with every kit.

You will need a few hand tools (a knife, a drill, a hammer, a screwdriver), sandpaper, and wood glue to assemble your dulcimer. For finishing, we recommend either polyurethane or a Danish oil.

The cardboard (corrugated paper) dulcimer kit is just what you've been trying to find! All of the paper parts are cut out, and ready to glue. The fingerboard made of solid hickory, and is slotted for nut, bridge, and frets, and also has holes for both mounting and winding the machine heads.

Detailed instructions are provided, and this kit should take you about two hours to build. You'll need to provide the following tools: a small hammer (for tapping in the frets); a small Phillips head screwdriver (for installing the machine heads); a piece of sandpaper, either 120 grit or 220 grit (for fitting the nut and bridge pieces); a pair of wire cutters (for trimming the frets and cutting the strings to length); and a flat file (for finishing the ends of the frets). You'll also need to provide some white or yellow glue (for assembling the cardboard parts).

People ask us how our cardboard dulcimers sound. They are the best cardboard dulcimers we've ever heard. The Folkcraft cardboard dulcimers have a sweet mellow sound. They don't have the volume of a cherry or walnut dulcimer, though. If you want a loud instrument, choose something in solid wood.

Our Folkcraft brand hourglass dulcimer has solid black walnut back, sides, scroll head, and fingerboard. The black walnut creates a fat, mellow tone with great resonance. The fingerboard veneer, back inlay and heel cap are made from padauk, which creates subtle ringing overtones as well as protects the fingerboard from strumming scratches. All of this, coupled with a western red cedar soundboard creates a higher overtone content that allows the notes to have a 'singing' quality that will make your performance outstanding. The circle of hearts tone holes design top off this beautiful dulcimer.

Folkcraft Northern Cherry Mini Dulcimer With Sitka Spruce Soundboard


This unique instrument plays in the key of D major and sounds one octave higher than the standard mountain dulcimer. The instrument has a scale length of 16.25", fingerboard width of 1 3/8", an overall length of 25" and 15 frets.

(Due to the small size of this instrument, we use lighter than usual strings. We recommend using the following gauges: .008, .008, .012, and .018BW.)

The standard size dulcimer has twelve treble courses and eleven bass courses for a total of thirty-five notes. It plays in the major keys of "D", "G", "C", and "F" and features a unique arched design which adds tuning stability and volume. The soundboard and back are genuine mahogany with the outer rails and bridges being walnut. The pin blocks are maple and strung with conventional music wire and finished with a clear, flat lacquer allowing the true colors of the wood to show.
