What you need to know before buying a bagpipe:

1.)  There are a few different types of bagpipes, and many of them have options on the woods, and covers without changing the model of the bagpipe.  Some bagpipes use a synthetic bag instead of the traditional natural bag.  Synthetic bags require less care and maintenance than the natural bags, but generally cost more.

2.)  Bagpipes come in different sizes, so you should know which size suits you best for the music you are playing and body size.  A popular beginner’s tool is a practice chanter.  This allows you to start learning how to play without the drones or the bag to get in the way.

3.)  Bagpipes can come apart into many pieces, so when you receive yours, it will need some assembly.  Even if all the pieces don’t initially fit snugly, the chords on the pipes can be adjusted to fix any of those problems.  Bagpipe reeds need to be replaced if they get damaged, or if they wear out.

4.)  Bagpipes have several different pipes connected to a bag.  There is a mouthpiece connected to the bag where the player blows air into the bag to keep it inflated.  There is the chanter pipe that plays the melody, and drone pipes that constantly play the same pitches, giving the bagpipe its unique sound.

5.) We offer a variety of bagpipes and practice chanters for beginners.  We also carry exact accessory matches to those bagpipes, so you have a consistent supply of anything you will need.
  • Practice chanters and sets. These are great for beginners because you can learn the fingerings and technique of playing a melody on bagpipe without the bag or drones.

  • Bagpipe, Rosewood, full size. These are good for a first full set because the rosewood is attractive but still durable.  They come with the synthetic bag option for a little more money.  This is the economical option for a full pipe set.

  • Bagpipe, Ebony, full size.  This is the option for those who want the best quality.  The ebony wood gives a good sound and the classic look.
